What many people love about the Beagle breed is the fact that they are so friendly and trusting. Beagles are people pleasers - that is a fact. Unfortunately, the same qualities that make them such great pets also puts them at risk for exploitation by research labs. The Beagle Freedom Project is an organization that seeks to rescue Beagles from testing facilities and to find them a good home.

History of the Beagle Freedom Project

The Beagle Freedom Project first began in the year 2010 when founder Shannon Keith received word that a group of Beagles that had been used for experiments in a research lab were being released. The project is actually a part of the Animal Rescue, Media & Education (ARME) nonprofit advocacy group that was founded in 2004. It is the goal of the ARME to eliminate the suffering of all animals through rescue, outreach, and public education efforts. Since its founding ARME has found homes for thousands of abandoned and homeless animals and they sponsor a Shelter Drive each year to collect toys, beds and treats for animals in need.

Shannon Keith, the president and founder of the Beagle Freedom Project, is an animal rights attorney herself and an international speaker on various animal rights issues. She works with other animal activists like Kevin Chase, Ryan Moore, and Dr. Paul Rousseau to find homes for Beagles that have been used for laboratory research.

Beagles are particularly popular for lab use due to their docile temperaments as well as their friendly and trusting natures. Researchers say that Beagles adapt well to living in cages and they are inexpensive to feed. The type of testing done on Beagles typically includes medical and pharmaceutical products as well as cosmetics and household products.

When the lab no longer has a use for the Beagles, they may try to find homes for them. All of the adoptions that take place with the help of the Beagle Freedom Project are completely legal and executed with the cooperation of the testing facility.

What Can You Do to Help?

If you want to join the Beagle Freedom Project’s mission, there are a number of ways that you can help. Doing something as simple as spreading the word by sharing a link to the project on your Facebook page or attending an outreach program can make a big difference.

The Beagle Freedom Project is also in great need of financial support – consider donating to the project directly or hold your own fundraising event to benefit the project. There is a list of current fundraisers on the project’s website that you can use for ideas.

Another important way to give to the Beagle Freedom Project is to volunteer your time and maybe even your home. Even if you cannot make the commitment to adopt a rescue Beagle, you should consider fostering one until the right home is found. After they leave the research facility, the lab Beagles need a place to stay and the project has limited space to house them. If you or anyone you know might be able to donate some of your time and space, contact the project for more information.

Unfortunately, animal testing is a widespread practice and it will take time to make any lasting changes. If you want to do your part to end animal testing or to at least help those animals who have survived the process, consider giving to the Beagle Freedom Project or adopt a lab Beagle yourself.
