Characteristics of a Beagle

Beagles are often one of the top choices as a pet for families, couples and single people. Their compact size, beautiful coat color and adorable facial expressions draw many dog owners to adopting Beagles. If you are thinking of welcoming a Beagle into your family, you will want to learn more about their personality and characteristics. When considering a Beagle for a pet, you will want to view all aspects of a Beagle and if the breed is a good fit for your lifestyle.

Mischievous and Intelligent

Beagles are highly intelligent and naturally curious about their surroundings. They enjoy exploring everything they can reach which often times causes them to be mischievous. As an owner of a Beagle you will often times find yourself trying to outsmart your dog in regards to keeping him out of trouble. You will need to keep many items out of reach from your Beagle, in addition to making sure there is not a way your dog will be able to climb on furniture or other objects to reach the forbidden item. Always be prepared to out with your Beagle.

Happy and Playful

Beagles exhibit a happy-go-lucky attitude. They are eager to enjoy life and bring laughter to their owner and family. Beagles often do this by encouraging play time by bringing their favorite toy to you to instigate a play session, or they may do unusual things that will surely make you laugh. Beagles have endless energy when it comes to playing and exercising, they will keep you just as busy.

Loving and Sweet

Beagles easily express compassion, kindness and are loving and sweet to their owners and family. They are also welcoming and kind to strangers. While your Beagle may keep you busy due to their high energy level, he or she will also have moments of pure sweetness and curl up on the sofa with you and watch a movie. You may arrive home from a long and stressful day at work, only to find a happy Beagle wagging his or her tail and ready to distract you from your negative feelings.

A Mind of their Own

Beagles tend to be stubborn and truly enjoy doing whatever they want to do. You may find yourself telling your Beagle to do something specific only to be met with pure avoidance. Beagles are known to have selective hearing at times, which means you should be prepared to be ignored at times. Early obedience training and establishing yourself as the leader of the household will help control the stubbornness. However, it will still appear at times. When this happens you will want to remain patient with your dog.

Welcoming a Beagle into your home means that you will have a dog that fills your home with positive energy, laughter, companionship, playfulness, stubbornness, love and happiness. Beagles are considered to have a merry disposition and often times will change your mood from negative to positive with their sweet and loving nature. In addition, Beagles are great with children and will provide them with a lifetime of play sessions and bonding.
