Urgent: Help Still Needed On CA Breeding Bill

URGENT: Help Still Needed on CA Breeding Bill

June 3, 2002

A bill placing additional burdens on sellers of dogs in California is still being considered by the California Senate. SB1373 failed to pass (by only 2 votes!), but may be reconsidered again soon. The deadline for it to pass was May 31st, but that has been extended now to June 15th. Phone calls from fanciers and clubs across the state are needed NOW. We must stop them from getting two more votes in favor of this bill!

Under this bill introduced by Senator Jack O’Connell, breeders and pet dealers in California will face new requirements:

    • Requires breeders and pet dealers to register with a local animal control agency and pay a fee. Fees will be determined by local animal control.
    • Breeders and pet dealers are further required to list their "registration fee receipt number" in any advertisement associated with the sale of that animal.
    • Breeders and pet dealers must ensure that the dog or cat has been microchipped and the owner’s identification registered in a local or national database.

What you can do...

  • Call your senator in Sacramento and ask him/her to vote "no" on SB1373. (Click here to find your Senator.)
  • All Republicans and Democrat Senator Joseph Dunn voted "no" last week. Thank them and ask them to do so again when SB1373 is reconsidered.

Who to Contact:

  • Several Democrats did not vote last week or voted very late. Since SB1373 is sponsored by a Democrat, we need to work especially hard on these legislators. Urge them to vote "no."
