Hello,

We are considering getting a small breed under 13 inches next May. I have read wonderful things and horrible things. We will be fencing our yard in. We will have time to devot. We have 2 small children. I am looking for a companion that can grow with my children who likes to ride and swim and who can learn commands and house training. Advice?

Beagles are wonderful family pets especially in a home like yours with children and time to spend with him/her. They are very trainable, I always recommend a good training class for basic manners. I don't feed people food to my dogs except for things like veggies, and they only get food in their bowls, or handed treats by their treat jar. That keeps them from being food obsessed beggars. House training is a bit slower sometimes with beagles but if you take the time to do it right, it won't be a problem. My three beagles are all rescues, I got two of them when they were 2 and one when he was 6. Fenced in yard will be a huge help for sure. My yard is fenced in with a 6 foot vinyl fence. Only hard thing to teach beags is to be off leash because their nose rules!

Housebreaking beagle puppies can go a bit slow but not as bad if you are home in the early months to get him/her on a schedule. I don't use crates but many beagle owners do it and have no problems.

If you use Facebook, there is a really active beagle site you might enjoy "I Love Beagles".
