I have been using the prolate dip regularly for 3 weeks. Doesn't seem to be better. Year old beagle, female. three spots noticeable, seems to be getting worse on her neck. Could I be adding too much water? I put her in the tub and wet her down, no rinse... Help!

Hi nala ,
Welcome to the forum.
Prolate/lintox dip is used to treat sarcoptic mange or scabies in dogs. If your dog has Demodectic mange , the Prolate/Lintox dip will not be effective. This may be why you have not had any improvement.

Could you give a little more info on your dog.
Do you have a diagnosis for the mange type from Vet?
If yes, what treatment did Vet recommend?

There is an article written by a kennel owner on this website that recommends the Prolate for demodectic mange as well.

For the shelter dog that I fostered, the vet prescribed Ivomectin, which worked vey well, but very expensve. Vet visit, testing and medicine.

Hoping for a less expensive alternative.

Are you the man that wrote the article? I was hoping he could give me some direction.

Thanks

nala ,
The author of the great articles on Beagle Health and other Beagle information was the owner of a Beagle Kennel and promoted the sport of Beagling. The original site was a message board that later became this forum. I was a poster on the original site. Today Beagles Unlimited has new owners that continue to improve and add content to this site.

>Are you the man that wrote the article?< No , I am a forum member and do rescue work , currently have 11 hounds.

> I was hoping he could give me some direction.<
You have a confirmed diagnosis for demodectic mange. I will be glad to help you with clarifications on information for treating Demodectic mange. Please post dog weight , age and describe the area of mange coverage and also say if you are having any secondary skin infection. A picture would help if you can but is not needed to get started. Please state any other meds being given at this time and describe general health of dog.

>Hoping for a less expensive alternative.< If your dog can tolerate the Ivermectin , it will be the most cost effective treatment option.

OK , the article you mention , Demodectic Mange and Inexpensive Treatment : Below is an excerpt from that article where it refers to Prolate as an option to treat Sarcoptic Mange and lets you know there is an article for treating Sarcoptic Mange in the Health section.

>One method that works extremely well is a cattle dip called Prolate which is used to rid a dog of sarcoptic mange mites. You can read the article on using Prolate by clicking on the following link (Sarcoptic Mange and Inexpensive Treatment). Simply dip your Beagle three (03) times per week for about two (02) to three (03) weeks.<

When you say ivermectin 1%, do you mean the Ivermectin 1% for cattle? If so, how do you dose it?

Thanks.
nala,

That is correct , and here is a link where I purchase this product : http://www.tractorsupply.com/ivomec-reg-ivermectin-1-injection-for-cattle-swine-50-ml-2207551

You can also find generic Ivermectin 1% for a little less , for example: http://www.jefferspet.com/injectable-ivermectin/camid/liv/cp/0028146/

Post back and give me the weight and age of your dog if you would like help with dose calculation.
