Hello, I use Ivermectin as described by Beagles Unlim.---have been for years. Today one of my dogs came in the house smelling like she just ate something really nasty, which is entirely possible we have alot of wildlife. I'm worried about her getting intestinal parasites, especially Coccidia. Can I just give her a dose of ivermectin, even if its not time for it, just in case? Or should I wait for symptoms?
Thanks!

I use Ivermectin for heartworm prevention with my 10 hounds. As for a prevention med for an unknown problem is not a good idea. I would wait and see if your dog shows any symptoms first. For some parasite problems there are better meds to use. May I ask what you treat with the Ivermectin on a regular basis.

To answer your question about intestinal parasite prevention ,in short , yes you should use some form of monthly protection. Most heartworm prevention meds include parasite prevention. Here is a link to a comparison chart for popular HW prevention meds. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?aid=580

What I do is use the Ivermectin for HW prevention and add generic Pyrantel pamoate. Dosing for both meds is by dog weight using a dosing syringe for accuracy.
This takes care of most common parasites and is very cost effective. I also keep some Praziquantel on hand for tapeworms that are sometimes a problem in summer months. I also keep some SafeGuard on hand if needed,

AS for the BARF diet and no reply , it may not be popular on this forum. I am sending you a PM that may be helpful.....
