Our Jamby had gone through false pregnancy last year and it was pure torture for her and for us too. She was miserable the entire time and was slow to accept the fact that there were no puppies coming along. We decided not to have her bred last season and we are still thinking about it for the coming heat season for fear of letting her experience another false pregnancy all over again.

Are there ways to prevent false pregnancy?

When a dog experiences pseudopregnancy, the odds are up that it might happen again. most owners choose to have their dogs spayed to prevent it from happening again.

I'm with you, orrymain. I had absolutely no idea that dogs could have false pregnancies. That's pretty amazing, I think.

It can be very heart breaking. Sometimes the dog will carry around a stuffed animal like it is a puppy.

and also a dog which has just went through a false pregnancy will oftentimes develop certain maternal instincts and will treat other newborn puppies as if they were her own. and certainly that means trouble when the true mother realizes what's happening!

I know of a dog who also had a false pregnancy and steals the puppies of another dog.

That is very sad.....stealing another dogs puppies. I guess if your dog has a false pregnancy one really needs to keep an eye on them and work on nurturing them.

Do you know that dogs who had just experienced false pregnancies also excrete milk? I noticed that with one of my terriers which constantly suffers from false pregnancies several times that I finally decided to have it sterilized.

A dog that has gone through a false pregnancy will also have milk let-down as though they really had whelped. Some dogs may lick their mammary glands thus the vet suggests putting on an Elizabethan collar for licking will prolong milk production and the accompanying discomfort.

I'm still contemplating on having my Jamby spayed. I guess it would be for the better. I don't want her to have to go through the experience of a false pregnancy. I gathered that there is a higher probability that it will happen again.
