Hello, Im looking for some advice for my 1yr 5mnth old Beagle.

Yesterday morning she started showing signs she was in pain, stretching out her stomach on the floor and crawling around yelping... This happened a few times and so we took her to the vet as she seemed in a lot of pain. The vet gave her pain killers, told us she most likely had a gastric infection and gave us some antibiotics to give her.

On the way home the pain got worse and worse, she was stopping to lie down every minute or so and whimpering/yelping. We took her straight back to the vets, she was shaking and panting heavily. The vets took blood which came back clear, put her on fluids, antibiotics, did a neurological test which was fine and kept her in.

We went up to visit and have another consultation late evening, she was very subdued, so much so I had assumed she was doped up on pain killers but I was told she wasnt, this really worried me. She was lethargic, dopey, sleepy. She knew who we were and was happy to see us but after the first minute or so of excitement she lay down and fell asleep.

They decided to keep her in overnight, keep her on the fluids and antibiotics and added a probiotic. They had ruled any back problems and were convinced it wasnt SRM as she had a normal temperature and didnt have a stiff neck.

They called me late evening to update me that she had eaten some food and had perked up, and then again first thing this morning to say she was fine to go home.

We have been given antibiotics and the probiotic to continue for a week. My big concern is that she is so so subdued. She is just laying in her bed, all day, hardly even raising her head - except to eat - which is a good sign. The vets are saying they dont really know what was wrong but she had a big bout of watery diarrhea and so due to this they are sure its a gastric infection.

Does anyone have any similar experiences? Should I be worried about her demeanor or is she just worn out from feeling so ill?

Any responses appreciated. Worried :-(

Gastric infection,

I hope your dog feels better, I had ongoing problem with gastritis for more than a year, actually is was giardiasis , toxoplasma and coccidiosis .
My dog is two years old already and he is ok.
He was in pain several times and we had to go to the Er several nights .
But he got better in max two days.
Let me know what happened.
Wish good luck.

Hi Judit

thanks for your response. Yes thankfully she is better. We've had a rough couple of weeks. First the gastric infection, then she perked up for a few days, then last weekend on the Saturday morning when we got up she couldnt walk! Another weekend in the emergency vets followed and the outcome thankfully just a strained back, but they were on the verge of testing for Addison's.

I did wonder if the gastric infection was giardiasis, i think it probably was to be honest.

Glad your dog is feeling better too!

Glad to hear she is better, it's always so scary when they are sick.
And why is this happening on the weekends or late at night?
I paid a fortune first time but later just asked for the painkiller and the fluid injection and rejected the xray and didn't leave him there for the night.
I have the pet insurance so it was manageable.
I really think when they reach the adult age- two years- the gastric distress is not so frequent anymore. Let's hope:)
