Stool sample shows Giardia in my dog's feces. Stool is a little loose.
I'm wondering, is this normal in a three years old dog?
When he was a puppy he got it several times but I was told adult dogs don't have a problem with it.

Hi kutyuska ,

Sorry to hear Ace is not feeling well.

To answer your question about Giardia showing up in a 3yo adult dog. Any dog can come in contact bad or standing water , feces from an infected animal , or dormant giardia cysts in the intestine of a dog that has had giardia in the past , and , can reactivate. Many aspects of how this happens are not understood.

The best thing to do is to treat Ace for the giardia , the sooner you treat the quicker Ace gets better.

Yes , Soft stool is a sign of giardia. Keep your hands washed as some forms of giardia are zoonotic.

I have treated my dogs for giardia more that once for various reasons , the last time we believe it was from drinking creek water...IDK

May I ask what med Ace is on for giardia treatment.

Try not to worry , and take care of yourself and family too.

Thnks, oldhounddog , he gets Flagyl 250 mg , twice a day. It was expensive from the vet, so I want to order from Fish-Zole, I hope it's good, the metronidazole I mean.
In the meantime he got more problems, tapeworm, got Drontal plus and another in two weeks.
These things happen.
I'm wondering about something else , Ace has calcification on his shoulder bone , started to limp. Got Rimadyl, laser therapy and 5 days Prednisone.
Vet prescribed 7 days but the side effects were so terrible I stopped it.
Vet also says it is to early to operate.
I have no clue what I will do???
He is not even three years old, neutered, vaccinated, eats Orijen and Acana, some days raw.
Now he is on diet to loose weight, going slowly but good, now he is 27 pounds. O
He gets exercise three walks and one hour dog park, every day.
What would you do being in my shoes?
Appreciate your answers as ever !!

kutyuska ,

The fish zole is metronidazole , just generic. product number 22154-475 is 250 mg metronidazole/30 tabs @ $17.99 Link: http://www.revivalanimal.com/Fish-a..._name=medicationsbirdandfishantibioticstopnav

In the meantime he got more problems, tapeworm, got Drontal plus and another in two weeks. ( The Drontal plus is a good med , but , there are cheaper meds that will do the same thing )
The tapeworm comes from Ace biting and ingesting an infected flea. The ingredient in the medication that kills the tapeworm is Praziquantel. So , what you need to buy is a product that contains Praziquantel , and dose for correct weight. Link: http://www.revivalanimal.com/D-Worm-Combo-Tablets.html

Yes , this is true. It's just like sending kids to school , and , they get exposed to everything. Being a good pet parent is knowing the difference between what you can treat yourself and when to use Doctor/Vet . Just like raising kids and treating colds and such. From reading your posts I know you are a caring and well informed pet parent. The key is education and making informed choices for ACE.....

Some dogs have a hard time with side effects of Prednisone and you did right to stop.
The Rimadyl will help Ace's pain for now. I have used Rimadyl many times with my dogs with good results.

This is where you can do some research as you have time. You may want to consider a consultation with an Orthopedic Veterinary Surgeon to give you the best perspective.. Start checking for references online from patients of Vets in your area , and , ask everyone how their pets/dogs are doing post op recovery.

Sounds to me like you are taking very good care of Ace.

Research and education will be your friend. Making informed choices is your goal.
