gunshy dog

My dog was shot for his 1st birthday . He is still hunting but the sight of a gun sends him ape ship. I waited a full year before took him out with a gun . Can anyone tell me if gunshyness can be over came ?? He has stolen our hearts and we work really well in the field before this happened .
