My Vet says to start HW prevention before the 6 months age. Make sure your dog is a breed that can take ivermectin .......
I have always started mine between 4 mo. and 5 mo. of age and have had no problems.

I dose all my dogs in micrograms and it is very easy to do. My vet says that that the dose for HW prevention is so small in Heart Guard that in his opinion even collie breeds can take Heart Guard in a given weight range.
I use Ivomec (ivermectin) and dilute for easy dosing in dogs.
Caution .... Do not use Ivomec Plus it contains chemicals that could hard your dog !!!

Approximately three of every four Collies in the United States have the mutant MDR1 gene. The frequency is about the same in France and Australia, so it is likely that most Collies worldwide have the mutation. The MDR1 mutation has also been found in Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties). Australian Shepherds, Old English Sheepdogs, English Shepherds, German Shepherds, Long-haired Whippets, Silken Windhounds, and a variety of mixed breed dogs.
The only way to know if an individual dog has the mutant MDR1 gene is to have the dog tested. As more dogs are tested, more breeds will probably be added to the list of affected breeds.

I have hounds and two setter/mix and have had no problems with dosing at the Heart Guard schedule for a given weight range. Notice that the dosing for HW prevention is in micrograms.

I have 1 beagle ,2 labs,4 yorkiePoo ,no they have never been on heart worm meds but we live on a 40 acre hobby farm out in UpperPenisula and heart worm wasnt a big deal
till recently around here.My vet (who recently died) did use ivermic in my dogs ears for ear mites ( now I wish I would of asked him about heartworm and dose for the ear mites.
He used it straight out of the bottle.Any help would be great !

You should check with your vet first to make sure your dogs test heart worm neg.
Below is what I use and do for my 10 hounds , you can use your own judgment whether this will benefit you.
Ivomec 1% injection or generic Ivermectin 1% injection type are the same drug, just compare labels.
**Do not use" Ivomec Plus" or any generic" Ivermectin Plus" as it contains chemicals that may harm your dog .**
If your dog is a breed that can take Ivermectin you are in luck as there are other off label uses as well at differing dose schedules.
If you consider Heartgard the gold standard for HW prevention please read on for small, med and large dog application.
Dosing for dog 1 to 25 pounds. 68 mcg.
Dosing for dog 26 to 50. 136 mcg.
Dosing for dog 51 to 100 pounds. 272 mcg.
As you can see there is a wide safety range for this drug as dogs at the lower end of a weight range receive much more Ivermectin than dogs at the top end. Having said this notice that FDA approved HW prevention dosing is in micrograms(mcg). Heartgard uses 2.72mcg. per pound as their upper control point , so , small dogs sometimes get significantly more Ivermectin than 2.72mcg. per pound in a given weight range.

Ivermectin 1% injection straight out of the bottle has 10 mg of Ivermectin per ml/cc.
One ml/cc of Ivermectin 1% injection contains 10 mg. / 10,000 mcg. Ivermectin.

It is hard to measure less than 1/10 ml/cc. , so , for the small dog of say 20 pounds or less using the Heartgard dose of 68 mcg. Ivermectin , it would make sense to dilute the Ivermectin 1% injection.
Use food grade propylene glycol ( order from local independent pharmacy or farm supply) to dilute Ivermectin 1%.
I buy IVOMEC® (IVERMECTIN) 1% INJECTION FOR CATTLE & SWINE, 50 ML bottle as this is the most cost effective for me.
** Do Not Use Ethylene Glycol ( antifreeze ) as this is POISON and will KILL The Dog **
Go to local pharmacy and pick up a new 120 ml plastic bottle, they will prolly give it to you.
Fill with food grade propylene glycol to 99 ml/cc eyeball just under the 100 ml/cc mark. Draw up 1 ml/cc Ivermectin 1% injection and add to the 99 ml/cc of propylene glycol in the bottle. Shake to mix.
Always clean rubber top on Ivermectin w/alcohol, let dry and use throw away syringes graduated in ml/cc . Never stick your source bottle of Ivermectin twice with same syringe , always use a new syringe.
You have 1 ml/cc Ivermectin 1% ( 10 mg ivermectin ) now in 99 ml/cc of proplene glycol for a total of 100 ml/cc.
10mg Ivermectin divided by total solution of 100ml = 0.1 mg or 100 mcg ivermectin per ml/cc.
To dose the small dog using the Heartgard schedule of 68 mcg. just draw up .7 ml/cc or 7/10 ml/cc of diluted Ivermectin 1% and you have 70 mcg. (micrograms) of Ivermectin.
To dose the large dog with above schedule 51 to 100 pounds just draw up 2.8 ml/cc or 2 and 8/10 ml/cc and you have 280 mcg. (micrograms) of Ivermectin.
Helpful Note: When measuring my dose, I pour a little of my mixed Ivermectin solution into a small dosing cup and use a dropper graduated in ml/cc or a dosing syringe(no needle) graduated in ml/cc to draw up the dose and give to dog or put on food. Make sure if on food that dog eats everything so you know the dose was given in full. If you are ever not sure your dog ate everything just re-dose with full amount the next day. Do not pour what is left over back into source bottle or you risk contamination. Just throw any solution leftover away as it is very inexpensive.
**Always use a fresh disposable sryinge to draw Ivermectin 1% and wipe top of bottle alcohol**
********Keep everything very clean so as not to contaminate mixed solution*********
Safety Note: As with any drug , make sure that Ivermectin can be used with any other medication , supplement or spot on topical such as Flea Prevention you are using. I do know that Ivermectin should not be used with the " Comfortis Flea control medication". If in doubt as to drug interaction with any med the dog is on ckeck with your vet first before using Ivermectin.

So, if I wanted to take my dog off Interceptor and instead treat with ivermectin for heartworms and treat internal worms seperately, I just use 68 mcg (or .7 ml/cc) and give it to my 7 lb chihuahua orally? And yes, I know not to use a needle when giving orally.

In many cases Interceptor is used for dogs like Collie type breeds that are sensitive to Ivermectin, more info click on link below.

If your dog is a breed that can take Ivermectin the answer is yes, however, as with any drug/med this is up to you. Do not use Comfortis flea med with Ivermectin.
I have posted what I do and have had no trouble of any kind with my 2 setter/mix dogs and 8 Redbone hounds.
I have also owned Brittany Spaniels, hound mix mutts , chihuahua , Irish setter and a small white terrier mix and all were treated with Ivermectin without any problems.
I have used Ivermectin to treat my dogs for over 25 years.
An important note to remember is that Ivermectin used for FDA approved "Heart worm prevention" is dosed in micrograms ( mcg ) .

I have an American bulldog along with several other dogs. My Am. Bulldog is 17 week old female. Even though I gave her the 7&1 shot EXACTLY as advised, one day before her last shot was due she got PARVO! It was horrible. We took her to get and she wanted between 300 and 600$ for a week of treatment! We could not afford that and since they go home and leave pets there alone during the night we decided she would get more hands on care with us. So, 6 days later after IV therapy ( I'm a nurse ), antibiotics, antiemetics, and ZERO sleep she has recovered. Now I told you all this to tell you they diagnosed her with dermodentic mange and she it losing the hair on her face and forehead due to immune suppression from PARVO.
Please advise me as to how to treat the mange, treatment and dose, AND what doses to use for heartworm preventative for ally dogs. Also, where to purchase it? We have a Macon tractor supply here where I was able to purchase the vaccines for my dogs and cats. They supply medications, foods, etc for all size animals. Do you think they would have it or of where do you purchase yours? Can I order it online?
I'm so sorry this has been such a long message but I want to get everything just right. Our Am. Bulldog is to be a service dog for my husband. He's 46 and just had 2 strokes. So I want to take the best care of her and All my animals that I can and also afford with the huge medical bills we have incurred since his first stroke in Jan.

If I understand you correctly , your dog has a confirmed diagnosis of demodectic mange?
Can you post a pic of the mange area?
What are you feeding your dog and how is she eating and drinking?
What does your dog weigh?

She has a confirmed case of demodetic mange. They did a stool specimen when we took her in for the parvo and came back in and told us she had it. They explained that's why her head was broken out and probably flaired up due to immuno suppression from parvo. They said there was some medicine she could take for 2 months that should take care of it but wouldn't discuss it until she recovered from parvo.
She weighed 21 lbs when she went in to vet but I would say 25 lb now that she is recovering.
She eats very well we have been adding chicken and the broth to her beneful every day to entice her appetite.
She drinks lots of water and always has.
She also gets 1/2 cup of plain yogurt daily. I read in several

To continue. I somehow lost the end of my message. Sorry, I'm new at this.
I have read in several sites online about am. Bulldogs and yeast problems with skin and ears. The treatment they advised for her ears has worked wonders so I have been following their suggestions about plain yogurt. I thought the rash on her forehead was the yeast they described and did not know about the mange until the vet told me. I would like to treat her mange with the treatment you have and then treat her and our other 3 dogs of all different weights for heartwo em preventative. I just need to know medication, dose, and administering instructions. Also approximately how much is the medication?
I'm sorry but with the medical bills from my husbands strokes and Miss Lady's treatment for her parvo, that's a question that I need to ask. We will have to get it just better to be prepared.

OK……. This is what I have used to treat Red or Demodex mange on my rescue dogs over many years and it worked for me.
Basis information : Ivomec 1% injectable (Ivermectin) 50 ml. bottle. Can be purchased from Farm Supply store.
*** Do Not Use Ivomec-Plus , contains chemicals that may harm dog***
1 ml. Ivomec 1% contains 10 mg Ivermectin or 10,000 mcg. (micrograms)
.1 ml. Ivomec 1% contains 1 mg Ivermectin or 1,000 mcg.

Treatment range : 300 mcg - 600 mcg per kg. of dog weight. ( Per Day )
1 kg = 2.2 pounds… So for a 25 pound dog, divide by 2.2 = 11.36 kg (kilogram)
300mcg. x 11.36 kg. Weight = 3408 mcg. Ivermectin dose at low end of treatment range. ( Per Day )
.1 ml Ivomec 1% = 1,000 mcg Ivermectin , so , .35 ml. dose = 3,500 mcg, Ivermectin. (rounded)
600 mcg. X 11.36 kg. weight = 6816 mcg. Ivermectin dose at high end of treatment range. ( Per Day )
.1 ml. Ivomec 1% = 1,000 mcg. Ivermectin , so , .7 ml. dose = 7,000 mcg. Ivermectin. (rounded)
Therapeutic range will probably be in the middle of low and high end of range.
Move up treatment range a little at a time.
*Stop treatment if any signs of toxic reaction to Ivermectin : May see staggering, vomiting, diarrhea, depression, or dilated pupils.*

Always wipe rubber top of Ivomec 1% bottle w/ alcohol , let dry.
Always use a new disposable syringe to stick Ivomec 1% bottle.
Draw enough Ivermectin out of source bottle for 2 to 4 weeks of dosing and put in small screw top bottle.
Use clean dosing syringe (no needle) and draw amount needed from screw top bottle for oral dose.

Always keep things very clean so there is no contamination of meds.
Watch for signs of secondary skin infection : topical anti-biotic or oral anti-biotic may be needed. Consult Vet………
Medicated shampoo or anti-fungal will help, always use luke warm or tepid water and never hot as it will make dog itch worse.
Benadryl will help itching : dose 0.5mg to 2mg per pound dog weight every 12 hrs..
Do not use Hydrocortisone cream or any topical with steroids…..

Important Note: Propylene glycol is the correct mixing agent to dilute the 1% Ivomec. ( 1% Ivermectin )
