I named my dog Toby after my favorite country singer at the time. Just think that if you were a dog, what would you wanna be called? Would you really wanna be called Fido or something crazy like that? I cant stand generic names that people give their dogs. I think Fiona is interesting though. I like that name.
Oh my gosh, Casey, yes. I adopted an SPCA beagle, pure bred, and her name was Poochie. I said 'I don't think so' and that night we lied down on the floor and discussed it. We decided on Katie, and she answered to it instantly. Poochie? Geez.
My hubby & I named our male Lucky because I've always wanted to name a dog that. People always said, "oh that's way too common" but around here I don't know a single dog named Lucky. It suits him well. He is crazy & lucky to have such a loving home. We named our female Diamond because Danny just didn't stick & she's my Diamond in the rough. ) Sweety pie she is. My sis in law made a picture with Lucky in the middle, and a few pics of Diamond around him, with a sky background, saying "Lucky in the sky with Diamond" hahahaa
I used to work with someone who had two basset hounds: one was named Fido and the other Rover. Other than that, though, I've never known a real dog named either.
As for our dogs, we've just sort of let the names evolve. After two or three weeks, whatever we've called them the most is what their official names became. After that, they've usually gone through a whole series of ever-changing nicknames. Our current beagle's name is Mable, and that was the name that the breeder's little girl named her. A couple of weeks after bringing her home, we found ourselves calling her Mable as well, so Mable it was. As for nicknames, she also goes by and responds to Pupper, Gooner, Maybelline, Puppus, Quanzo and Tire Nose.
Toby (and another beagle I had a year ago named Ringo) didnt care what i called them. they got excited and nearly tripped over each other to get to me or anyone in my family. honestly, i think naming animals is more for humans than the animal. they can care less and we think so hard about it. i bet they would laugh at us if they knew how hard we think of names for them, when to them, other dogs are named, that one, the other one, and the big one. haha.
