I have a beagle 10-12 years old. I got him as a stray when he was about 2 or 3. I immediately realized why he was a stray when he began escaping every chance he got. And he can escape it all. After months of trying different things, I finally have a collar that tightens when he pulls and relaxes when he does. He goes out in the yard on a line using that collar and he can not escape. The other day he saw something and pulled really hard, hurting his neck. This is his first problem in 7 years with the collar. But the vet has him on a strict no collar/leash lifestyle now for at least a month. I don't want him to go back on it even after that because I don't want him hurt again. We have a fenced yard but it's a rather large yard and he can jump/dig to get out no matter what I try. He has a harness now, but no harness can contain him when he wants to chase.

Any ideas on how to keep him safely in the yard? We have two other dogs (not beagles) that roam the yard freely. I'd hate to isolate him from them.

This is what I use with my 10 hounds for three large dog run areas. I know the first time you look at this and think about it you may say, Oh no... It does really work and will keep your dogs from getting hurt. I started using one of these after one of my dogs kept digging/climbing out of run area. They will check out the fence after it is installed and they will only check it once. After having the fence active for a couple of weeks you can probably just turn it off.

Sounds like yard supervision might be what you need. I never let my girls out in the yard alone. If I do need to be in the house for 5-10 minutes, I give them a busy ball or something to keep them occupied. Our yard is surrounded by a 6 foot high vinyl fence but i know that Vazzle would find a way to dig under and get out. You could also get a fenced in run that has a top on it - chain link would be really hard to dig under.
