Has anyone used prolate dip on young puppies? In the article, it mentions dipping all adults and pups. Just wondering if anyone has dipped small pups?

Welcome to Beagles Unliminted.

The Prolate/Lintox dip would be way too strong a treatment for young pups and small dogs in general. If you look at the precautions you have to take to protect yourself when using Prolate , you will get a sense of just how potent this insecticide is.

Would you please post some general info on pups and what condition you are treating for ?

puppy prolate

I am aware of the strength. I am between a rock and a hard place as I have a litter of patterdale terriers who have contracted sarcoptic mange. Their dam got it from the stud dog and now some of the pups have some some crusty spots on them that are causing intense itching. These guys are 7 weeks old. I am treating all of my adults, however, I am not sure how to handle the pups. I would hate to let it progress any further. Any ideas?

The very best way to go is Revolution. ( dosed by weight ) Mfg says safe for dogs 6 wk and older. To treat for sarcoptic mange you would treat all dogs every 2 wks and this will cover life cycle of the mite. Make sure no bath for dog/pups 2 days before and 2 days after treatment with Revolution.

What I would do: Buy Revolution large dog package and empty all content into small screw top bottle so you can split up dosing per dog by weight ( using a dosing syringe ) and save $$$.
Dosing chart by weight for Revolution: http://www.sheltermedicine.com/documents/selamectin-revolution-dosing-chart

For itching: BENADRYL(Diphenhydramine):
Benadryl is an antihistamine that helps relieve swellings and itching from allergic reactions and is used long-term to treat allergies. The dose is one milligram for every pound given twice daily.

Use topical anti-biotic ( without steriods ) for skin infection. In case of serious skin infection oral anti-biotics from Vet may be needed...

Clean all bedding and spray the crate and/or living area of dog/pups with a mixtire of 1oz. Prolate to 1 gal water and let dry... This will kill any loose mites on surfaces around your dog/pups.

If I left anything out , or , for some reason this will not work for you please post back...

revolution

Thanks. I had come to that conclusion last night and actually made a shopping cart from the same place to order the revolution. I didn't realize, however, that I could divide the doses with revolution. THANK YOU. The only reason I hadn't done that to begin with was that it was cost prohibitive. Thankfully, I hadn't sent my order out last night - just put the stuff in my shopping cart. Now it will cost me 1/3 less

That is correct , buy the largest weight range package and dose by dog weight. I'm glad the information was helpful and I wish you the best of luck and hope all are well soon.

Note: Remember... When treating Sarcoptic mange with Revolution , dose by weight every 2 weeks. Treatment for 4 weeks will take care of the mites in most cases , however , if you have enough Revolution give 3 doses at 2 week intervals for a safety margin if possible...

You will need to be very serious on cleaning and treating bedding , crate and general area living area with Prolate or permethrin based insecticide as the mite can live off host for 3 or 4 days.

I have only had to treat sarcoptic mange ( scabies ) once many years ago and will never forget it.

Please let us know how things go , and ........ GOOD LUCK !!!

BTW....I buy the largest weight range size Frontline Plus , divide and dose by weight. Works great and saves $$$.
