puppy dude ,

Due to the seriousness of your post , and , with reference to having puppies dying at about 8 weeks of age.

You need to take your dog and puppies to a Veterinarian right away to resolve this health issue.

Please do not use any worming product on a pregnant dog without Veterinary approval and instruction.

Please post what you find out.

puppydude ,

Worming pregnant dogs.
If you breed your dog, she should be dewormed just before breeding, and again before whelping. Treat her again 2, 4 and 6 weeks after whelping to help prevent the transmission of parasites to her puppies. source of information: http://www.safe-guard-for-dogs.com/faq.asp

Safe-Guard 10% suspension horse/cattle dewormer : Link http://www.lambertvetsupply.com/Safe_Guard_Suspension_10_1000_ml_Bottle-P44916.aspx
Note: This product is a suspension and must be shaken well before each use.

The recommended dosage of this exact product and strength is 1 ml (which contains 100 mg active ingredient) per 5 lbs. So , for example a puppy weighing 2 lbs. would receive .4 ml of Safe-Guard 10% liquid. Always use a dosing syringe (no needle) to be accurate, Do not use a dropper....

As long as all pups are eating and equally active, I deworm each litter at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Safe-Guard (Fenbendazole) is always administered for 3-consecutive days rather than only one day, to be sure your puppies and dogs are 100% worm-free.

Fenbendazole (Safe-Guard or Panacur) is one of the safest dewormers on the market. Fasting is not required and it is safe during pregnancy and lactation.

I hope this helps , and , good luck with pups and mom......

If I left anything out , post back.

Safe-Guard is always used for 3 consecutive days.

Worming of a pregnant dog is done prior to whelping according to Merck Animal Health. It is my understanding that this is by or after day 40 and before day 50 of pregnancy. I would confirm this with your Vet

What I have done is regular worming before pregnancy , then , after whelping I worm the Bitch with the pups at 2wks , 4wks , 6wks and 8wks. To say this another way , I have not wormed any Bitch during pregnancy and this has worked for me. Since I do not know your circumstances , again , check with Vet to be on safe side.

Good Luck..........................

As an aside , just trying to be helpful. Lately I have run across many folks with sick puppies on a random basis. Remember that a pup does not have full immunity until after all puppy series shots are given and 3 weeks after 1st dog shot. IMO Protect new pups at all cost even trips to the Vet can be dangerous.

pyppydude ,

The Vanguard 5 vaccine is a good one.

The fact that you may have gotten some bad shot could be due to how the product was shipped and or stored. This is the reason I only buy vaccines from trusted sources and have them shipped to me with cold pack. I have also purchased from vendors such as Tractor supply with good results. Sometimes this is trust that the products have been handled properly by good vendors.

Read carefully : It will not benefit your pups to give any vaccine before 6 weeks of age , IF , the mother has been vaccinated. The milk from the mother for the first 48 hours after giving birth contains antibody-rich milk is called colostrum. So , your pups will only receive antibodies against diseases for which the mother had been recently vaccinated against or exposed to. This part becomes really important for example , a sick pup that may not get a full supply of mothers milk for first 48 hours is at greater risk.

The age at which puppies can effectively be immunized (protected) is proportional to the amount of antibodies the puppy received from its mother. High levels of maternal antibodies present in the puppies' bloodstream will block the effectiveness of a vaccine. When the maternal antibodies drop to a low enough level in the puppy, immunization by a commercial vaccine will work.

The antibodies from the mother generally circulate in the newborn's blood for a number of weeks. There is a period of time from several days to several weeks in which the maternal antibodies are too low to provide protection against the disease, but too high to allow a vaccine to work. This period is called the window of susceptibility. This is the time when despite being vaccinated, a puppy or kitten can still contract the disease.

This is why a series of puppy shots are given , starting at about 6 weeks and immunity starts to develop slowly.

I start puppy shots at six or seven weeks , and then every three weeks for a total of ( 3 or 4 ) puppy vaccine shots like your Vanguard 5. What you really want is the last puppy shot to be given at 14 to 16 weeks age regardless of the number of puppy shots given. Wait at least 2 weeks past last vaccine shot to get Rabies Vaccination.

=======================================================================================================

The bottom line is protect pups at all cost. Keep them away from other dogs except the mother. This is why a trip to the Vet can be so dangerous and hazardous , for example , if a pup or you for that matter walks across the grass where a dog parvo infected dog has eliminated you are in contact with the virus. This happens all the time in the grass right out in front of the Vet office as everyone stops by to let their dogs pee or potty.

The Benefits of Using Safeguard To Deworm Adult Dogs, Puppies and Pregnant Dogs. ... Safe guard works by basically disrupting the worm's energy metabolism and because it attacks primarily the parasites and not the dog's tissue, it is very safe to use
