Diatomaceous earth (not pool grade!) can be rubbed into the fur to kill fleas. Careful not to rub too close to the eyes. Also can be used on pet bedding and carpets.

For ticks, it is always best recommended to just do a complete check of the dogs fur after such an adventure. It is time consuming, but not too difficult with shorter fur.
